Kampala, Uganda
Ssentamu Zubair, a 32-year-old resident of Kawempe Division, is among several members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who remain incarcerated without trial. Ssentamu was arrested last month by police on allegations of organizing illegal activities associated with the opposition party.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Oyesigye, Ssentamu was apprehended for allegedly coordinating unlawful movements linked to NUP. His case file, registered as UP/2023/2028, falls under charges related to illegal political activities. However, Ssentamu has denied all allegations and continues to dispute the charges against him.
His arrest has drawn criticism from human rights activists and opposition figures, who argue that his detention—without being presented in court—violates his constitutional rights. They claim that political suppression has become a tool used against opposition supporters in Uganda, particularly those affiliated with Robert Kyagulanyi’s (Bobi Wine’s) NUP party.

Concerns Over Arbitrary Detention
Sources indicate that Ssentamu is one of several NUP supporters held under unclear circumstances, raising concerns over due process and fair trials. Political analysts and civil society organizations have called on the government to either formally charge the detainees or release them, citing international legal standards on arbitrary detention.
Efforts to obtain further comments from authorities about the status of Ssentamu’s trial and possible release have been met with limited responses. Meanwhile, NUP leadership continues to demand justice for its detained members, accusing the state of politically motivated arrests aimed at weakening opposition voices ahead of future elections.
The Uganda Police Force confirms the arrest of Ssentamu Zubair and several others on allegations of organizing illegal activities linked to the National Unity Platform (NUP). According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the individuals were apprehended for allegedly coordinating unlawful movements that posed a threat to public order and security.

Impact on Families
Meanwhile, family members of the detainees, including Ssentamu’s relatives, have come forward to express their distress. They have pleaded with the government to provide clarity on the fate of their loved ones, arguing that prolonged detentions have caused immense psychological and financial strain on families.
